Monika Walerowicz

Mezzo-soprano.

She graduated from the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz where she attended the viola class of prof. Zbigniew Frieman (1995) and solo singing class of prof. Brygida Skiba (1997). Since 2001, she has been an academic staff member at this Academy (Ph.D. in Fine Arts).

Monika Walerowicz is a laureate of numerous national competitions such as: the First Polish Singing Competition of I. J. Paderewski in Bydgoszcz (Grand Prix in 1999) as well as international contests such as: the 35th F. Vinas International Singing Competition in Barcelona (1998), Ada Sari Competition (the first award, special award and four additional awards in 1999), Moniuszko Competition (the first award in the category of female singers in 2001). Walerowicz’s successful performance during ARD International Competition in Munich in 2003 resulted in her appearances in the National Theatre in Linz (Austria) as Carmen and Princess Eboli in Don Carlos.

At the beginning of her career, she cooperated with a range of philharmonics in Poland and abroad. Her opera début took place in 1999 in Łódź as Lady Macbeth. Later on, she cooperated with the opera theatres in Szczecin, Bydgoszcz and Porto.

In 2004, she signed a long-term contract with the Staatstheater in Kassel (Germany) where she performed the roles of Dejanira in Hercules by Handel, the Muse and Nicklausse in the Tales of Hoffmann, Isabella in the Italian Girl in Algiers and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos.

She has cooperated with numerous directors such as: Stefan Herheim, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Dominique Mentha, Gabriele Rech and Barrie Kosky as well as with the conductors: Howard Arman, Wolfgang Bozic, Demis Russell Davies, Adam Fischer, Rainer Mühlbach, Marc Piollet and Roberto Paternostro.

Walerowicz has made guest appearanceson significant German stages as Carmen, Princess Eboli, Laura in La Gioconda and Isabella in the Italian Girl in Algiers. She has also created the role of Isabella in Istanbul.

Since the season of 2009, the singer has been cooperating with Staatstheater in Hannover. In the season of 2011/2012, she performed the roles of: Octavian in the Knight of the Rose, Waltraute in the Valkyrie and Twilight of the Gods, Isabella in the Italian Girl in Algiers and Rosina in the Barber of Seville. This season, she is débuting as Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte.
