Yasushi Hirano

The bass Yasushi Hirano completed his vocal studies in his hometown, Tokyo, before doing post graduate studies at the University of Vienna with Rotraud Hansmann and in the Opera Studio of Michael Temme and Leo Plettner as well as in the Lied Class of Robert Holl and Charles Spencer.

His initial engagements led him to the “Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg” (as Emireno in Handel’s “Ottone”) and to the Krakow Opera (as Colline in “La Bohème”) as well as to the Tongyong International Music Festival in South Korea where he performed in Isang Yun’s “The Butterfly’s Widow”.

In summer 2006, Hirano performed at the Salzburger Festspiele (in Henze’s “Gogo no Eiko”) as well as at the Bregenzer Festspiele (in Offenbach’s “Blaubart”). In the season 2007/08 Hirano has been under contract at the Graz opera where he could be heard in roles including Eremit and Kuno(“Der Freischütz”), Samuel (“Un Ballo in Maschera”) and Erster Handwerksbursche (“Wozzeck”). In 2008, Yasushi Hirano acted asPhorbas/Pan in the Austrian premiere of „Alcione“, an opera composed by Marin Marais.

In the season of 2008/09 he became a fix member of the Volksoper Wien, where he has interpreted the roles of Colline in “La Boheme”, Alidoro in “”La Cenerentola”, Sparafucile in “Rigoletto”, Zuniga in “Carmen”, Sprecher in “The Magic Flute” and Bonzo in “Madama Butterfly”. In this opera house Hirano appeared more than 150 times during the four seasons.

In 2008, under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, he sang the Voice of Neptune (“Idomeneo”), and in 2011 interpreted the role of Micha in “The Bartered Bride”.

Yasushi Hirano also has a successful career as a concert singer, which led him to Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Japan. In January 2009 he made his debut at the Golden Hall of Musikverein Vienna as Baritone solo of Beethoven’s 9th symphony with Ton Künstler Orchetra under the baton of Andres Orozco-Estrada. 

In March 2010 he sang with the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra as Mephisto in “Faustszenen”/Schumann, conducted by Dirk Kaftan. He has performed extensively at the prestigious concert hall such as the Berliner Philharmonie, Wiener Konzerthaus, Smetana hall in Prague and RAI Auditorium in Turin.
