Klemens Sander
Baritone
Klemens Sander was born in Austria. A former member of St. Florian Boy’s Choir, Klemens studied at the University of Music and Applied Arts Vienna with Helena Lazarska, Robert Holl and David Lutz. Additionally, he has taken part in masterclasses with Thomas Hampson, Gundula Janowitz, Dagmar Pecková and Hartmut Höll.
While still a student, Klemens made his operatic début in 2001 at the Volksoper Wien (THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE). As a resident soloist for both the Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Volksoper Wien, Klemens has performed Papageno (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), Conte Almaviva (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO), Belcore (L’ELISIR D’AMORE), Marcello and Schaunard (LA BOHÈME), Ping (TURANDOT), Donner (RHEINGOLD), the title-role in Eugene Onegin, Dr. Falke (DIE FLEDERMAUS) and Harlekin (ARIADNE AUF NAXOS).
A regular guest at the Theater an der Wien, Klemens has performed Handel’s GIULIO CESARE under René Jacobs, Poulenc’s DIALOGUES DES CARMÈLITES under Bertrand de Billy, Strauss’ INTERMEZZO under Kirill Petrenko and Britten’s DEATH IN VENICE under Donald Runnicles. Further operatic engagements include Papageno (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE) for Grand Theatre Luxembourg under Christopher Moulds, DIE GEZEICHNETEN under Kent Nagano for the Salzburg Festival, both the title-role in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI and Escamillo in Bizet’s CARMEN for the Klosterneuburg Opera Festival, Seikyo in Tan Dun’s TEA at both Teatro Carlo Felice Genova and Neue Oper Wien, and Conte Almaviva (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO) for the National Opera Vilnius.
Recent concert highlights include Weill´s DIE SIEBEN TODSÜNDEN under the baton of H.K. Gruber and Bach´s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO wih Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich under Matthew Halls at Musik Festival Grafenegg, Mozart’s C-MINOR MASS under the baton of Jeremie Rhorer (Salzburg Festival), Handel’s MESSIAH, JUDAS MACCABÄUS and Bach’s ST. MATTHEW’S PASSION (Wiener Konzerthaus), Fauré’s REQUIEM under Georges Prêtre at both the Berliner Philharmonie and for MDR Leipzig at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Beethoven’s MISSA SOLEMNIS (Wiener Musikverein), Bach’s ST. JOHN’S PASSION under Kwamé Ryan with Orchestre National de L’Aquitaine Bordeaux, Brahms’ EIN DEUTSHCES REQUIEM with Concerto Köln (Hamburg Laeiszhalle), Martin’s GOLGOTHA (Stefaniensaal Graz) and Orff´s CARMINA BURANA in Tokyo, Taipei and Madrid.
Further engagements of season 2011/2012 have included Schubert’s A-FLAT MAJOR MASS under Andrés Orozco-Estrada with Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich and Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi in Spain and Austria as well as Beethoven´s MISSA SOLEMNIS with Orquestra Sinfónica do Estado de São Paolo under Thomas Dausgaard in Brazil.
He has also performed under Helmuth Rilling, Franz Welser-Möst, Leopold Hager, Martin Haselböck, Christian Arming and Andreas Spering.
Klemens made his Wigmore Hall recital début in 2005 with Charles Spencer after winning the “Richard Tauber Prize for singers”. Furthermore, after being awarded the Lied Prize at the International Competition in S’Hertogenbosch, Klemens has established himself an acclaimed recitalist performing for BBC Cardiff, Salzburg Easter Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival and at venues including Schubertsaal (Wiener Konzerthaus), Gläserner Saal (Wiener Musikverein) and with Justus Zeyen at both Mozarteum (Salzburg) and Centre des Arts Pluriel (Luxemburg). In 2011, he was invited to sing Brahms´ LIEBESLIEDER WALZER with Michael Schade, Birgid Steinberger and Bernarda Fink at the Ocean Sun Festival.
Upcoming commitments of season 2012/13 include, amongst others, Orff´s CARMINA BURANA at Wiener Musikverein, Brahms´EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM at Teatro Monumental Madrid, a recording of his Lied debut CD with Schubert´s SCHWANENGESANG with Justus Zeyen (piano), Recitals in South America and Beethoven´s IX. SYMPHONY at Beethoven Festival Warsaw.
At Volksoper Vienna, Klemens Sander can be heard in 2013 as Papageno (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE), Marco (GIANNI SCHICCHI), Juán Castrado (DAS WUNDERTHEATER) and Silvio (DER BAJAZZO).
